This volume is devoted to Joseph A. (Joe) Ball's contributions to operator theory and its applications and in celebration of his seventieth birthday.Joe Ball's career spans over four and a half decades, starting with his work on model theory and related topics for non-contractions and operators on multiply connected domains. Later on, more applied operator theory themes appeared in his work, involving factorization and interpolation for operator-valued functions, with extensive applications in system and control theory. He has worked on nonlinear control, time-varying systems and, more recently, on multidimensional systems and noncommutative H_-theory on the unit ball and polydisk, and more general domains, and these are only the main themes in his vast oeuvre.Fourteen research papers constitute the core of this volume, written by mathematicians who have collaborated with Joe or have been influenced by his vast mathematical work. A curriculum vitae, a publications list and a list of Joe Ball's PhD students are included in this volume, as well as personal reminiscences by colleagues and friends. Contributions by Yu. M. Arlinskii, S. Hassi, M. Augat, J. W. Helton, I. Klep, S. McCullough, S. Balasubramanian, U. Wijesooriya, N. Cohen, Q. Fang, S. Gorai, J. Sarkar, G. J. Groenewald, S. ter Horst, J. Jaftha, A. C. M. This book deals with the question how communities across Europe during the later 3rd millennium BC adopt and transform the Bell Beaker phenomenon differently. By looking at these processes of change from the perspective of settlements and settlement material culture, an interpretation is given to the development of this phenomenon that is alternative to the currently prevailing migration models.Instead, the author uses social theories on the spread of innovations, the development and functioning of communication networks and the social technologies involved in the production of material culture in his arguments. For the first time, settlements from various regions of Europe are studied at the same level and compared using modern research methods such as aoristic frequency distributions, the Bayesian modelling of radiocarbon dates and network analyses. Temporal and spatial variability in the regional processes that lead to the adoption (and rejection!) of Bell Beaker innovations are described in detail. The regional variability in communication between settlements, and the exchange of ideas and objects and mobility of people are combined with sociological network theories on the spread and adoption of novel ideas. Regional differences in the production of pottery are reviewed by both quantitative and qualitative methods. Finally, a Bell Beaker network is described in which various processes of innovation adoption and subsequent re-invention, developing communication networks and different forms of mobility take part.ContentsPreface by the authorPreface by the series editors1 Setting the scene2 Theory and methodology3 Methods4 Sources and limitations: settlements and radiocarbon dates5 Analysis: Innovation processes6 Analysis: Social landscapes of innovation7 Analysis: Innovation and tradition in pottery production8 Discussion and conclusionBibliographyCaptionsAppendicesSummaryZusammenfassungAcknowledgementsCurriculum vitaeTabular Curriculum vitae

This volume is dedicated to Professor Arto Salomaa on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The 32 invited papers contained in the volume were presented at the festive colloquium, organized by Hermann Maurer at Graz, Austria, in June 1994; the contributing authors are well-known scientists with special relations to Professor Salomaa as friends, Ph.D. students, or co-authors. The volume reflects the broad spectrum of Professor Salomaa's research interests in theoretical computer science and mathematics with contributions particularly to automata theory, formal language theory, mathematical logic, computability, and cryptography. The appendix presents Professor Salomaa's curriculum vitae and lists the more than 300 papers and 9 books he published.

Capturing the state of the art of the interplay between partial differential equations, functional analysis, maximal regularity, and probability theory, this volume was initiated at the Delft conference on the occasion of the retirement of Philippe Clément. It will be of interest to researchers in PDEs and functional analysis. TOC:Preface.- Curriculum Vitae of Philippe Clément.- Contributions by G. Caristi, C. Carstensen, S. Cerrai, G. In this work of curriculum theory, Ed Douglas McKnight addresses and explores the intersections between place (with specific discussion of Kincheloe's and Pinar's conceptualization of place and identity) and race (specifically Winthrop Jordan's historical analysis of race as an Anglo-European construction that became the foundation of a white mythos). To that end, he employs a form of narrative construction called curriculum vitae (course of life)-a method of locating and delineating identity formation which addresses how theories of place, race and identity formation play out in a particular concrete life. By working through how place racializes identity and existence, the author engages in a long Southern tradition of storytelling, but in a way that turns it inside out. Instead of telling his own story as a means to romanticize the sins of the southern past, he tells a new story of growing up within the 'white' discourse of the Deep South in the 1960s and 70s, tracking how his racial identity was created and how it has followed him through life. Significant in this narrative is how the discourse of whiteness and place continues to express itself even within the subject position of a curriculum theorist teaching in a large Deep South university. The book concludes with an elaboration on the challenges of engaging in the necessary anti-racist complicated conversation within education to begin to work through and cope with heavy racialized inheritances.

This edited volume contains 16 research articles and presents recent and pressing issues in stochastic processes, control theory, differential games, optimization, and their applications in finance, manufacturing, queueing networks, and climate control. One of the salient features is that the book is highly multi-disciplinary. Another distinct characteristic of the book is that all papers are motivated by applications in which optimization, control, and stochastics are inseparable. This book will be a timely addition to the literature and will be of interest to people working in the aforementioned fields. Most importantly, this volume is dedicated to Professor Suresh Sethi on the occasion of his 60th birthday, in view of his distinguished career, his contributions and achievements, and his influence on the areas of control theory and applications, operations research, and management science, as well as his dedication to the scientific community. TOC:Preface.- S.P. Sethi's curriculum vitae.- TCP-AQM Interaction: periodic optimization via linear programming.- Explicit solutions of linear quadratic differential games.- Extended generators of Markov processes and applications.- Control of manufacturing systems with delayed inspection and limited capacity.- Admission control in the present of priorities: a sample path approach.- Some bilinear stochastic equations with a fractional Brownian motion.- Two types of risk.- Optimal production policy in a stochastic manufacturing system.- A stochastic control approach to optimal climate policies.- Characterization of just-in-time sequencing via apportionment.- Linear stochastic equations in a Hilbert space with a fractional Brownian motion.- Hedging options with transaction costs.- Supply portfolio selection and execution with demand information updates.- A regime-switching model for European options.- Pricing American put options using stochastic optimization methods.- Optimal portfolio application with double-uniform jump model.- Index.
